Wrapping up the School Year

Wrapping up the School Year

The 2008/09 school year has come to an end, and what a year it has been! This year, JA Northern Colorado/Wyoming saw tremendous growth, reaching 18,397 students- a 5% increase over the last year! Thanks the support of many volunteers and donors, JA Northern Colorado/Wyoming doubled the number of middle school and high school participants, both totaling 1,400 students. We look forward to seeing everyone next year as we continue to create a generation of young people who are financially literate, workforce ready and entrepreneurial.

JA Bowl-A-Thon: Bowling for Education

Through competitive fundraising and bowling, 146 teams from 55 local companies took part in the 2009 JA Bowl-A-Thon, working together to raise $73,000 for JA in Northern Colorado/Wyoming. Anadarko Petroleum Corporation earned the honor of being the top company by raising $8,234. Thank You!

JA thanks our sponsors for their support and generosity: Citi, Best Buy, Chipotle, King Soopers , Grease Monkey, FirstBank, Little Caesars, Deloitte, and Waterway Gas & Wash.

JA Northern Colorado/Wyoming is expecting even more growth in 2009/10 thanks to Wal-Mart’s "JA Wyoming Inspiration Project" grant. The grant is expected to increase the number of student participants in Wyoming by 25%, reaching out to a minimum of 2,750 K-12 students in 2009. The grant is also expected to raise middle school and high school participation in Wyoming by 50%, impacting 300 students. In addition to involving more students, the grant will also cover recruiting, training and providing follow-up support to 40 new classroom volunteers.

Volunteer Profile

Nick Tart, a new JA volunteer, epitomizes one of the core values of Junior Achievement: entrepreneurship. Nick is a young entrepreneur who started JuniorBiz.com , and has six years experience as General Manager of a teen lawn mowing and snow removal service. He wants to help and encourage other young entrepreneurs, and did so recently by participating in the “eSummit” (Entrepreneurial Summit), sponsored by Cricket Communications, during JA Business Week. Nick joined two other local entrepreneurs: Jim Talaric, founder of Fusion Specialties , which manufactures the mannequins featured in current Old Navy commercials, and Darrin Foster, co-founder of Oogie’s Snacks , which makes all-natural, flavored popcorn which was featured on the Rachel Ray show.

Nick just entered his senior year of college at Colorado State University and is pursuing a degree in Business Administration with concentrations in Management and Marketing. He is currently devoted to building his business (JuniorBiz, LLC), developing and driving traffic to his website (http://juniorbiz.com), and writing his second book (Official JuniorBiz 75 Young Business Ideas).

After the eSummit, Nick blogged about his experience: “I want to thank all of the students. You guys are incredible. I hope I’ve convinced and inspired you to continue with entrepreneurship. From the few of you that I talked to, I can tell the entrepreneurial wheels are turning and it was exciting to meet you all.”
